Back before the Wii was released, Nintendo of America said the Wii would be region-free. Nintendo of Europe said no, it would be region-locked. Nintendo of Europe won (unfortunately).

Yes, it totally sucks. Their trying to protect their markets but because of that, they just make things annoying for the rest of us. Well, whatever, at least there is freeloader, although nintendo could kill it at anytime.
